Logo Critique

Here is the "final" logo that I showed in class today. I want to keep the "N" because I think it gives the logo character and a uniqueness that sets it apart from other logos and generic typefaces. I do think the G would be a good letter to change to relate more to the "N" and balance the wordmark, so the N doesn't seem like a separate letterform. I will try the suggestions that I got in class to alter the G and hopefully something will work!

Company Logo Design- Symbol Roughs

My company is a luxury electronic brand, so I wanted to create symbols that related to technology (electronics) and/or high-end luxury goods. I looked up common electronic symbols and incorporated them into some of my designs.

Company Logo Design—Creative Brief

This technology company is a luxury brand of electronics that offers sophisticated, elegant and sleek media related electronics. The company sells attractive electronics with a designer name and style. The product mix includes televisions, digital cameras, portable media players, cell phones and audio components like home theater systems, speakers, stereos and headphones. The company may also expand into the computer industry so the identity system should reflect the versatility of the company and the forward thinking aspect that drives the company. The products are easy to use yet offer aesthetic visual appeal and the status of a luxury brand.

The target market for this brand is upper middle class to upper class men and women looking for prestigious electronics that not only offer function but also form and status. The audience will have the products in their home and on-the-go, so they most likely will be socialites and enjoy entertaining at the home and going out with others. The personality of the brand is sophisticated and elegant. It’s cutting edge technology and contemporary, high-class appearance makes it a smart choice in electronics. The target market will get a sense of status by owning one or many of these products. Owning an electronic device from this company will bring provide the users with the confidence of owning a highly luxurious brand.

Some of the competitors of this company include leaders in the electronic and retail technology industry. The competitors are also committed to quality and high-tech electronics. Bose and Apple are the main competitors. Other competitors include Sony and Samsung. This brand is a multi-channel retailer offering its products in retail stores as well as online.

The brand is positioned to be technologically advanced and show this through the advanced and sophisticated visual form of the actual product and the premium pricing. The identity system should clearly communicate the high quality of the product as well as the beauty of the products and the advanced, cutting edge technology.

Technology Research

The second assignment is to create a business within a given industry: TECHNOLOGY! I want to create a retail brand that sells media related, cutting-edge technological devices. Our business should fill a gap within the given industry. I did some research to figure out what type of retail brand I wanted to develop.

Big Box Category Killers

Specialty Retail

After doing some research online I found that technology retail chains are divided into two types, category killers and specialty retailers. I found that there is more of a gap within the specialty retail brands. I don't think that there is much competition for high end technology brands such as Bose and Apple that have their own retail stores (in malls for example), so I want to create a business that is a store based, high end specialty, media technology retailer.

LOGO REDESIGN five examples

The first project is to take a current logo and improve the design and concept. The first step in this process is to find examples of poor logo design and poor representation of the brand. After looking through tons of logos on products, in magazines and online, I chose the following logos:

The Nabisco logo is very recognizable, but is not very versatile because of the red triangle that looks like it must fit into a corner. The circle around the brand and the lines coming out of the circle look more like antennas, something futuristic or just lines to fill up the corner of the triangle (all of which do not communicate food, snacks or reliability that the brand stands for).
The next logo I chose the Ulta Beauty logo. First of all, the swoosh does not communicate "beauty" it is more representative of established and serious businesses. Second, the thick and thin strokes on the typeface make the logo look messy and the lack of alignment of the word "beauty" also adds to the unstructured and less modern appeal.
I think the Best Buy logo does not represent the brand image that is more contemporary, cutting edge and technologically advanced. The ultra bold black type on the bright yellow background makes it appear older, 80s! The alignment of the type creates awkward shapes and gets a little close to the edges in some areas.
Macy's logo is strong in some ways, the lightweight type is contemporary which relates to the trendy designer and private brands that Macy's is known for. The star, however, does not speak sophistication or quality apparel and brands. In addition, Walmart also had a star in their logo, and I don't think Macy's is going for the same image as Walmart! SEE BELOW!

Here it is! The Walmart logo, well the old one. They have a new logo, but up until now this is what Walmart was known for, the bold, caps type and the star in the dark blue. Power hungry!
